USS Sculpin (SS-191) was a United States Navy Sargo-class submarine during World War II. She was commissioned on November 16, 1938, and her first operational patrol was in the Pacific in May 1942. During her fourth patrol in November 1943, she was sunk by Japanese destroyers off the coast of Truk Lagoon in the Caroline Islands.
Nine of the crew managed to escape the sinking submarine and swim to shore, where they were eventually captured by the Japanese. The survivors were taken prisoner of war and held for over two years in brutal conditions. Only four of them survived until the end of the war.
USS Sculpin was awarded one battle star for her service in World War II. In 1985, a team of American and Japanese divers discovered the wreck of the USS Sculpin, and a memorial plaque was placed on the site by the US Navy to honor the crew.
